What does the term "handcrafted" mean to you? For many, these terms come to mind: pride, quality, craftsmanship, uniqueness, one-of-a-kind works of art. For others, it can also mean carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive strain injuries, fatigue. What once was a hobby, a labor of love, has now turned into a job filled with more stress, less time for relaxation, etc. Many craftsmen wonder: "Could a CNC router save me valuable time, money, and wear-and-tear on my body?" Not long ago, Bill Forman of Pampa, TX, began wondering that very thing.

Bill Forman has been making hand-crafted bows used in traditional archery for over 16 years. After producing nearly 11,000 bows, he has achieved the status of master craftsman in his field. Now, he has chosen to employ a CAMaster CNC Router to assist him in easing his workload and automating some of the processes used in manufacturing his line of pristine, hand-crafted bows for traditional archery.

An Overview of the Process

The following is an overview of the process used to prepare the machine to produce the parts Great Plains needed:

Finished examples of handmade parts are sent to a service bureau to be laser-scanned.
Service bureau scans parts, front and back, and uploads stereolithography (.STL) files to the internet for use in 3D machining software.
CAD/CAM programmer downloads .STL files into 3D machining software, and creates toolpaths.
Toolpaths are sent to the CNC Machine.
Finished parts are cut from raw stock (front and back).
